Information Session and Learning Symposium
Information Session
We will be hosting a general Royal Roads University information session in Ottawa for prospective students on Tuesday, Feb. 7. We are looking for two to four alumni who would be willing to share highlights from their Royal Roads University experience. Should you wish to present in front of the audience or would prefer to participate by perhaps meeting one on one with alumni we welcome your attendance at this event. Please contact Mehgan Knauf at the email listed below for further details.
We will also be hosting a Learning Symposium for those of you would like to reconnect with Royal Roads through an educational seminar style evening, hosted by Dr. Matt Dodd from the School of Environment and Sustainability. Please find further details on the Learning Symposium below, and note the start time, location and RSVP for both back-to-back events.

Making Advances Toward the Elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs): How will this impact our daily lives?
Presented by:
Dr. Matt Dodd, Associate Professor; Leader of the Royal Roads Environmental Monitoring Research Program
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are substances released into the environment through a variety of human activities. Find out what these POPs are and what their elimination means to our daily lives. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has designated 12 POPs ("The Dirty Dozen") as priority pollutants under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), based on an overwhelming body of scientific knowledge on toxicological and environmental concerns. Nine new POPs were added to the list in 2009. The Convention, which came into force on May 17, 2004, is currently supported by 151 signatories and is intended to reduce or eliminate the use, discharge and emission of these POPs. Canada was the first country to sign and ratify the Stockholm Convention and has been a world leader in the battle against POPs. In fact much of the original research that showed the long range transport of POPs to the Arctic, persistence in the environment, the accumulation of these chemicals up the food chain and into humans, and their environmental and human health effects, was conducted by Canadian scientists including Royal Roads University researchers.
